Alice is a Music Student at Worcester College, Oxford, studying composition under Professor Robert Saxton. In college, she is an active member of the Worcester College Music Society and also holds a choral scholarship for the chapel choir. Significant compositional ventures include awards in 2013, 2014 and 2015 for the St Cecilia Masonic Lodge Composition Competition, as well as composing a collection of diverse chamber music and a piece for the Newcastle University Big Band. Alice is also entering her fourth year of commissions for the festival band of the Great North Big Band Jazz Festival, the latest of which was performed in March for the festival’s opening night. As well as writing for the band, Alice is their pianist and aids with the workshopping of original commissions.
The work on the Proust project has presented many exciting stylistic and literary challenges, and this piece will be submitted as part of Alice’s composition portfolio for Finals in 2018.
Adam L Turner
I am a composer, pianist and trumpet player at Worcester College, Oxford, reading music.
I am currently studying composition with Robert Saxton and have written three pieces in the last year: a setting of William Blake’s The Echoing Green for Baritone and Piano, a short Prelude for a mixed ensemble, and an unaccompanied choral setting of the anonymous text There is no Rose, composed for the choir at Worcester College Chapel.
The piano was my first instrument, which I took up at the age of six, studying with Miriam Benkova and Roger Owens. Over the past few years I have greatly enjoyed playing as a soloist in a wide range of styles. Recently I have performed Haydn’s Piano Concerto in D (Spring, 2014), Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor (March 2015), and Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with the Hampshire County Youth Wind Ensemble under Phillip Scott (Summer 2015). I also took part as the pianist in a project to perform Bernstein’s Prelude, Fugue and Riffs at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the 2014 Music for Youth Prom, and performed a solo recital at the Winchester Arts Festival in 2015. Aside from solo performance, I enjoy working as an accompanist and répétiteur. This year I was the répétiteur and harpsichordist for a University chamber production of Mozart’s Così Fan Tutte in the Jacqueline du Pre Music Building (February 2016), and was the assistant musical director for Guys and Dolls at the Keble O’Reilly theatre, Oxford (October 2016).
I have recently become interested in conducting, having had the opportunity to conduct the Worcester College Orchestra last year. This term I am involved in a project to start a new student chamber orchestra, the Walton Street Sinfonia, which will be performing its first concert on the 28th November in the Wesley Memorial Church, Oxford.
I am delighted to be composing a piece for this exciting and deeply fascinating project!
